Mixed-Use Infill Housing

Mixed-Use Infill Housing (New Bedford, MA)

R.I.S.D., Fall 2009

To revitalize and rebuild the Acushnet Heights neighborhood in New Bedford, MA, different infi ll housing strategies are considered, each including flexible community programs. Site 1 (Weld Street) is designated as temporary, transitional housing and incorporates communal spaces as well as housing services in the bar building that connects the first floor of each residence. At Site 2 (Austin Street), single occupancy lofts are set atop a plinth that contains a community workshop space as well as employment services. Mixed-use commercial and residential buildings edge Site 3 (Purchase and Pleasant Streets), surrounding a semi-private courtyard inside. These projects not only attempt to blur public and private space through mixed-use programs and the various conventions employed (bar building, plinth and courtyard), but attempt to envision new sustainable ways of living in an urban environment.
